The Hungarian Parliament voted Tuesday to prohibit transgender people from changing their gender on government documents.

With overwhelming support, the measure passed their legislative body with 134 votes in favor and only 56 opposing it.

In response to the criticism, Hungary issued a statement to CNN noting that while the law forbids government documents from recognizing anything other than sex at birth, individuals are not prevented from identifying however they wish in their day-to-day personal lives.
